Owner/Manager of the Whistledown Hotel, Sarah McAvoy and her family have set their sights on reaching a £20k fundraising target to support the End-of-Life Nursing Charity, Life & Time, in memory of her Father Peter Lawless – who was supported by the Charity’s services in his final days at home.
Along with her husband Colum, daughters Beth, Eve and Molly and her brother David, Sarah took on the ambitious project to run the 2024 VHI Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin and encouraged friends and family to join her endeavours.
In all, some 53 women from South Down, heeded the call, and joined Sarah this weekend in Dublin – taking part in what has become the largest women’s event of its kind in the world – to walk, jog and run to the 10km finish line.
Sarah said: “From an idea that formed when talking to friends and family, to having 53 women come together to raise over £17, 000 in a matter of weeks, I am just amazed of the level of support that has come from far and wide. These women have been so supportive of me and the family following Daddy’s death and the efforts to raise money for this amazing charity have been phenomenal, I am so grateful.
“We are so fortunate, that Life & Time operates in the South Down region. To be able to choose to die at home, and for the patient and family to have access to an overnight on-call nursing service is an amazing service to have in our area.”
Life and Time are a registered nursing agency and charity, dedicated to providing end of life care for patients (and support to families) at home – similar to what they might experience in a hospital setting. Following a GP referral, the team can provide an overnight on-call service from 10pm to 8am delivering symptom control, advice and support. Currently the charity operates in Warrenpoint, Burren, Rostrevor, Rathfriland, Mayobridge and Hilltown with plans underway to expand services into the Mourne region.
“I’m am so delighted that the McAvoy family and friends can make this gesture of support as a thank you, and tribute to Dad, ” Sarah adds.
The current fundraising total stands at just over £17,000 but Sarah is hopeful they’ll hit a £20k target this month. To support, please find the team link on Just Giving (McAvoy Life and Time).
